What is a root canal?
A root canal is a procedure that is used when the root pulp in a tooth becomes infected. Tooth pulp was an essential part of the tooth when you were younger—it helped the tooth mature. However, once the tooth is mature, tooth pulp is no longer strictly necessary and can become infected. This infection is what causes your toothache.
What is the root canal process?
First, Dr. Thompson will give you a regular exam. This helps us analyze your overall dental health. If we find any problems (which is probable if you have a toothache!), a root canal may be recommended.
During the actual root canal procedure, Dr. Thompson will numb the area and then clean out the infected tooth pulp. Once this is complete, he will place some antibiotic medicine to prevent further infection. Finally, he will insert tooth-colored filling material into the repaired tooth. If needed, he may also place a dental crown onto the tooth to make sure it is fully protected.
